DocsReferenceMarker Types

Marker Types Reference

SwimLab has seven marker types. Each captures a specific event in a race and feeds into different parts of the splits calculation.

Start

PropertyValue
ColourBlue
Keyboard shortcutS
Required for splitsYes — every annotation must have exactly one Start

When to place it: The exact frame when the swimmer’s feet leave the block (or push off the wall for backstroke). For backstroke, this is the moment the feet release from the block footrest.

Do not place Start at the starter’s signal — that’s what the Reaction marker is for.

Finish

PropertyValue
ColourBlue
Keyboard shortcutF
Required for splitsYes — every annotation must have exactly one Finish

When to place it: The exact frame when the swimmer’s hand (palm or fingertips) touches the touchpad at the finish wall. For IM and breaststroke, this must be a two-hand touch on the same frame; if unsure, use the frame the second hand touches.

Turn

PropertyValue
ColourOrange
Keyboard shortcutT
Required for splitsYes — one per lap turn

When to place it: The exact frame of the wall touch at a turn. This is:

  • Freestyle / backstroke flip turn — the frame the feet touch the wall
  • Breaststroke / butterfly turn — the frame both hands touch simultaneously
  • IM transitions — use the rule for the stroke that ends at the turn

One Turn marker per turn. For a 200m race (4 laps, 3 turns) you need exactly 3 Turn markers.

Breakout

PropertyValue
ColourGreen
Keyboard shortcutB
Required for splitsNo — but required for underwater metrics

When to place it: The frame when the swimmer’s head breaks the water surface after a start or turn. More precisely, the first frame where the crown of the head is above the surface line.

Adding a Breakout marker after each Turn enables the Turn cycle time metric (Turn → Breakout) in the splits table.

15m / Underwater

PropertyValue
ColourPurple
Keyboard shortcutU
Required for splitsNo — but required for underwater distance metrics

When to place it: The frame when the swimmer’s head passes the 15m mark from the start or turn wall. Most pools have a 15m marker on the lane rope or pool floor — use this as your reference.

Adding a 15m marker after Start and/or each Turn enables the Underwater time metric in the splits table.

Reaction

PropertyValue
ColourRed
Keyboard shortcutR
Required for splitsNo — but required for reaction time

When to place it: The frame of the starter’s signal — the moment the beep sounds or the gun fires. SwimLab will calculate Reaction Time as the time from this marker to the Start marker.

Tip: For reaction time, your video must capture the starter’s signal. If filming from the finish end, audio delay may make this imprecise — a camera at the start end with clear sight of the start system is ideal.

Custom

PropertyValue
ColourGrey
Keyboard shortcutM
Required for splitsNo

When to place it: Any event that doesn’t fit the categories above. Examples:

  • Stroke error or technique fault
  • Equipment malfunction (goggle slip)
  • DQ-related event
  • Mid-race coach observation

Custom markers show up in the splits table as their own row with the name you give them. They do not feed into automatic split calculations unless placed between two standard markers.
