Video Trim

The Video Trim tool lets you cut a short clip from any point in a race video and download it as an MP4. Use it to share a specific turn, breakout, or technique moment with an athlete or parent.

When to Use Video Trim

  • Sending an athlete a 10-second clip of their turn to review
  • Sharing a short highlight clip on your club’s social media
  • Extracting a comparison clip for a presentation or report
  • Isolating a DQ incident for referee review

Trim a Clip

Open the race

Open any annotated race in the annotate screen.

Click Trim

Click Export → Trim clip in the toolbar. The player switches to Trim mode.

Set the in-point

Scrub to where you want the clip to start and click Set In (or press I). A yellow bracket appears on the timeline.

Set the out-point

Scrub to where the clip should end and click Set Out (or press O). A second yellow bracket marks the end.

Preview the clip

Click Preview to play back just the selected section and confirm it looks right.

Download

Click Download MP4. SwimLab processes the clip (usually a few seconds) and downloads it to your computer.

Clips are exported at the original video resolution and frame rate. There is no re-compression — quality is preserved exactly as uploaded.

Trim from a Marker

You can jump straight to a marker when setting the in or out point:

  1. In the marker panel, right-click (or long-press on mobile) on any marker
  2. Select Set as Trim In or Set as Trim Out

This is the fastest way to extract, for example, 2 seconds before a Turn marker to 2 seconds after the Breakout marker.

Clip Length Limits

PlanMaximum clip length
Starter30 seconds
Coach5 minutes
ClubUnlimited

If your trim selection exceeds your plan limit, you’ll be prompted to shorten the clip or upgrade.

Annotations in the Clip

Downloaded clips are clean video — marker overlays and the splits table are not burned in by default.

To export a clip with markers visible as overlays (text labels burned into the video):

  1. Enable the Show annotations toggle in the Trim panel before downloading
  2. Marker names will appear as text at the top of the frame at their time position

Sharing Without Downloading

If you want to share a clip without downloading a file:

  1. Set your in and out points as above
  2. Click Share clip link instead of Download
  3. A shareable URL is generated that plays only the trimmed section — perfect for sending via messaging apps

Links are view-only and expire after 30 days. Extend or regenerate them in Settings → Shared Links.
