Annotate Screen

The Annotate screen is where you spend most of your time in SwimLab. It combines a video player, marker tools, and a live splits table in a single workspace.

Playback Speed

Use the speed selector next to the play button to slow the video to 0.25×, 0.5×, or 0.75×. Slow motion helps you find exact frame positions for marker placement.

The Marker Panel

The marker panel (right sidebar) lists every marker in chronological order. Each row shows:

  • Marker type icon (colour-coded)
  • Marker name — editable by double-clicking
  • Timestamp — the video time at that marker
  • Delete button (trash icon, visible on hover)

Markers appear as colour-coded pins on the timeline below the player. Clicking a pin or a row in the panel jumps the player to that moment.

Adding Markers

Use keyboard shortcuts for the fastest workflow:

KeyMarker type
SStart
TTurn
BBreakout
FFinish
RReaction (false start / DQ event)
UUnderwater (15m mark)
MCustom marker

Pause on the exact frame, then press the shortcut. The marker is added at the current playhead position.

Work through the race in chronological order: Start → Turn 1 → Breakout 1 → Turn 2 → … → Finish. This keeps your marker list clean and avoids gaps in the splits table.

The Timeline

The timeline strip below the player gives you a bird’s-eye view of the entire race:

  • Blue pins — Start and Finish markers
  • Orange pins — Turn markers
  • Green pins — Breakout markers
  • Purple pins — Underwater (15m) markers
  • Grey pins — Custom markers

Hover over a pin to see its label and timestamp. Click to jump the player to that frame.

The Splits Table

The splits table appears below the video and updates live as you add or move markers. It shows:

  • Lap splits — time from Start to each Turn, and between Turns
  • Stroke rate (if stroke markers are present)
  • Underwater distance (if 15m markers are present)
  • Total time — from Start to Finish

See Splits for a full explanation of how each value is calculated.

Saving and Sharing

Annotations save automatically — you’ll see a “Saved” indicator in the toolbar.

To share your annotation with an athlete or another coach:

  1. Click Share in the toolbar
  2. Copy the link or send directly via email
  3. Recipients can view (but not edit) the annotations in their browser

Exporting

Click Export in the toolbar to:

  • Download splits as CSV — opens in Excel, Numbers, or Google Sheets
  • Download annotated clip — a trimmed MP4 with markers burned in (uses the Video Trim tool)
  • Copy splits to clipboard — paste directly into a message or document

Keyboard Shortcuts

Every action in the annotate screen has a keyboard shortcut. See the full list: Keyboard Shortcuts →
